In December 2022, 196 countries adopted the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework under Convention on Biological Diversity. The outlines four ambitious global goals and 23 targets for world to address loss of biodiversity more sustainable use natural resources. One those targets—Target 3—commits achieving protection at least 30% terrestrial inland water areas marine coastal by 2030 (the “30 × 30 target”). This is one largest conservation commitments that around have made. Prior signing Framework, a survey residents in seven (Australia, Barbados, Colombia, Germany, Kenya, Mongolia, USA) was conducted understand their level awareness gauge support target. surveyed late strong majority respondents each country rated target favorably were likely government making it. only multi-country pre-Global provides useful baseline track changes opinion over time.

Abstract The global climate and biodiversity crises are closely intertwined, yet no policy instrument currently tackles both jointly. This is problematic, as the lack of international platforms for designing coordinated coherent frameworks that align targets across nexus change poses risks to nature people. Here, we argue successful implementation Paris Agreement Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) requires a joint work programme between United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Biological Diversity (CBD). Such could fill current governance vacuum address critical gaps, while fostering innovation synergies in action. Based review existing programmes under UNFCCC interagency established with CBD, provide concept how this be set up, ideas type issues it should tackle recommendations implementation. Abstract To combat climate change, bioenergy is expected to play a more substantial role in the global energy mix, necessitating expansion of crop plantations during 21st century. Low‐quality or abandoned agricultural land commonly proposed for growing crops. However, restoring such back natural vegetation also key biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration. Thus, understanding ecological implications land‐use changes involving both restoration required. Here, we use data calculate Biodiversity Intactness Index (BII) different uses, including plantations. We combine our BII models with maps use, yields priority areas estimate effects on from current day, due expansion. then compare replacing either any crops, only existing that restoration. Finally, contrast planting crops versus Planting places relatively high amounts would substantially reduce BII. result less negative than areas, small increases remaining vegetation. rather expanding better outcomes Contrasting spatial compared highlights where could be least detrimental BII, as Central Europe east coasts USA China. Synthesis applications . While best strategy biodiversity, minimise losses intactness. achieving targets bioenergy, change will require strategic planning compromises.
