With the recent technological advancements, such as internet, big data, and cloud computing, China’s digital economy plays a significant role in economic development. However, may also affect environmental quality, but prevailing literature is scant on how affects urban pollution. To fill this gap, study established an index system based 277 prefecture-level cities China calculated their indicators from 2011 to 2019. Using two-way fixed effects model, mediation effect model moderation multi-dimensional empirical test conducted determine impact of pollution internal mechanisms. Empirical results indicate that significantly reduces pollutant emissions shows spatial heterogeneity. After series robustness tests endogenous analysis, our findings are consistent. The mechanism reveal can help mitigate through improved industrial structure, promotion green innovation, financial Further, demonstrate government intervention enhance negative economy. Moreover, heterogeneity (i.e., city size, time, space heterogeneity) show development more reducing large eastern coastal cities.
