Mate choice is a critical decision with direct implications for fitness. Although it has been recognized over 150 years, our understanding of its underlying mechanisms still limited. Most studies on mate focus the evolutionary causes behavior, less attention given to physiological and molecular involved. This especially true invertebrates, where research largely focused male behavior. review summarizes current state knowledge neural, neurohormonal female in including behaviors before, during, after copulation. We identify areas that have not extensively explored suggesting potential directions future investigation. hope this will stimulate further area.

While genetic variation is of crucial importance for organisms to be able adapt their ever-changing environments over generations, cognitive processes can serve the same purpose by acting at shorter time scales. Cognition, and its resulting behaviour, allows animals display flexible, fast reversible responses that, without implying a change, are adaptation survival. In research field on sexual conflict, where studies focus male female mating strategies that increase individual’s reproductive fitness while forcing cost partner, role cognition may play in how such optimised has been widely overlooked. However, careful analysis behavioural shows develop change depending what they perceive as well predict from experience, which prime optimising fitness.
