While
genetic
variation
is
of
crucial
importance
for
organisms
to
be
able
adapt
their
ever-changing
environments
over
generations,
cognitive
processes
can
serve
the
same
purpose
by
acting
at
shorter
time
scales.
Cognition,
and
its
resulting
behaviour,
allows
animals
display
flexible,
fast
reversible
responses
that,
without
implying
a
change,
are
adaptation
survival.
In
research
field
on
sexual
conflict,
where
studies
focus
male
female
mating
strategies
that
increase
individual’s
reproductive
fitness
while
forcing
cost
partner,
role
cognition
may
play
in
how
such
optimised
has
been
widely
overlooked.
However,
careful
analysis
behavioural
shows
develop
change
depending
what
they
perceive
as
well
predict
from
experience,
which
prime
optimising
fitness.
As

reviewed
here,
