The name Petalidium ovatum is reinstated and an amplified description provided for a species of confined to Namibia. used be treated as synonym the widespread P. englerianum, but morphological characters support reinstatement. range-restricted species, only known from Khorixas-Bergsig area in Kaokoveld Centre Endemism, northwestern Namibia, where it grows on arid hillsides along ephemeral riverbeds drainage lines. Diagnostic include pale grey, often almost white, appearance plants, vegetative parts with dense white indumentum both stellate dendritic trichomes, flowers borne short few-flowered dichasia, bracts oblanceolate apices acute or obtuse, bracteoles widely ovate. are distinctive having anterior corolla lobe partly completely yellow, others burgundy, two upper lobes connate towards base half their length. A comparison some more prominent features differentiate its morphologically most similar relative, provided. Based IUCN Red List categories criteria, conservation assessment Least Concern (LC) recommended species.

Petalidium hoarusibense, hitherto misidentified as P. rossmannianum and ohopohense, is here described a new species. It range-restricted species, only known from the area to south southeast of Okandjombo in Kaokoveld Centre Endemism, northwestern Namibia, where it grows on arid hillsides along ephemeral riverbeds drainage lines. Diagnostic characters for hoarusibense include pale grey appearance plants, single or multi-stemmed thick rootstock, vegetative parts with dense white indumentum short dendritic, simple bifurcate trichomes appearing matted, flowers borne short, few-flowered dichasia, bracteoles narrowly ovate elliptic, deeply concave, cobwebbed due mixture loosely entangled long dendritic trichomes. The are distinctive having lobes magenta anterior lobe sometimes slightly lighter shaded than others two separate triangular yellow nectar guides. A comparison key morphological features distinguishing kaokoense, its closest relative appearance, well rossmannianum, sesfonteinense, welwitschii, provided. Based IUCN Red List criteria, provisional conservation assessment Vulnerable (VU) recommended

Petalidium namibense, hitherto confused with P. englerianum, rossmannianum, and the widespread variabile, is here described as a new species. It range-restricted species, only known from area to southwest, west northwest of Puros in Kaokoveld Centre Endemism, northwestern Namibia, where it grows at base rocky outcrops, on arid hillsides, along ephemeral riverbeds drainage lines. Diagnostic characters for namibense include pale grey appearance plants, corky bark older stems, vegetative parts dense white indumentum relative long dendritic trichomes appearing lanate, flowers borne short few-flowered dichasia, bracteoles narrowly ovate. The are distinctive having two upper corolla lobes discolorous, abaxially light brown, adaxially vermillion, without nectar guides, connate towards 25–40% their length. anterior lobe magenta long, triangular yellow guides. lateral or distally magenta, grading vermillion throat, lack conspicuous A comparison key morphological features distinguishing sesfonteinense, its closest appearance, well provided. Phytotaxa, Journal Year: 2024, Volume and Issue: 636(1), P. 35 - 47

Published: Feb. 1, 2024

Petalidium etendekaense, previously mistaken for P. glutinosum and variabile, is now described as a new species. The name pilosibracteolatum considered synonymous with the older glutinosum, latter of which also lectotypified. newly species currently only known from vicinity Bergsig slightly further west towards Skeleton Coast National Park in Kaokoveld Centre Endemism, northwestern Namibia. It typically grows on hillsides along ephemeral riverbeds, primarily soils derived Etendeka Group basalt. Diagnostic characters etendekaense include its tomentose-strigulose indumentum, inflorescence main axis secondary branches that invariably become spiny age, corolla an ovate front lobe longer than it wide. Additionally, all lobes exhibit similar colours, ranging dark burgundy to carmine pink apices. A comparison some morphological features provided differentiate variabile. Based IUCN Red List categories criteria, we conducted conservation assessment, resulting being classified Least Concern (LC).
