Harmonization of timber production and forest conservation is a major challenge modern silviculture. For the establishment ecologically sustainable management, management-related environmental drivers multi-taxon biodiversity should be explored. Our study reveals those variables related to tree species diversity composition, stand structure, litter soil conditions, microclimate, landscape, land-use history that determine richness composition 11 forest-dwelling organism groups. Herbs, woody regeneration, ground-floor epiphytic bryophytes, lichens, terricolous saprotrophic, ectomycorrhizal, wood-inhabiting macrofungi, spiders, carabid beetles, birds were sampled in West Hungarian mature mixed forests. The correlations among diversities compositions different groups also evaluated. Drivers principally while litter, soil, historical less influential. complex roles shrub layer, deadwood, size trees determining various taxa revealed. Stands with more sustained higher stand-level several taxa. Besides, stands dominant harbored communities Therefore, landscape-scale may enhance at landscape level. effects overstory layer on manifested many cases via microclimate conditions. Diversity showed weaker relationship other than variables. According our results, most influential are under direct control actual silvicultural management. In Europe, forest management has controlled dynamics to sustain commodity production over multiple centuries. Yet over-regulation for growth and yield diminishes resilience environmental stress as well threatens biodiversity, leading increasing susceptibility an array of disturbances. These trends have stimulated interest in alternative systems, including natural silviculture (NDS). NDS aims emulate disturbance at stand landscape scales through silvicultural manipulations structure patterns. We adapted a "Comparability Index" (CI) assess convergence/divergence between disturbances effects. extended the original CI concept based on size frequency by adding residual canopy trees after third dimension. populated model compiling data from 13 countries covering four major types (i.e., spruce, beech, oak, pine-dominated forests). found that are highly variable size, frequency, structure, but European fails encompass this complexity. Abstract Purpose of Review Boreal forests provide a wide range ecosystem services that are important to society. The boreal biome is experiencing the highest rates warming on planet and increasing demand for forest products. How to manage forest for biodiversity conservation is an ongoing debate. We argue that maximizing in managed landscapes requires a diversity of management regimes space and time. This will generate high levels habitat heterogeneity at landscape scale, which turn support various groups species. Based on concepts from ecology, we formulate five hypotheses how diversity, i.e. combining approaches can benefit overall across production landscape. First, increase and, therefore, beta (the hypothesis). Second, asynchrony timing enhance long-term availability different types spatio-temporal Third, create spatial adjacency or proximity stands with successional stages by providing simultaneous access multiple resources interspersion Fourth, heterogeneous unmanaged set-aside forests, interspersed are needed complete natural Fifth, functional connectivity between protected forests species through time temporary corridor Although strongly grounded these remain largely under-investigated, suggest methods they be tested. In the meantime, increasing represents risk-spreading approach adaptation global change, therefore likely reasonable objective sustainable forestry moving forward.
