Abstract In this study, the changes in interannual variability of upwelling Western South China Sea (SCS) from 1958 to 2015 and their relationships with climate are investigated using reanalysis data numerical simulations. Our results show that three main regions, is, East Coast Vietnam (VE), Southwest Hainan Island (HNW), (HNE), has significantly changed after 1990s, influenced by El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Indian Ocean dipole (IOD). Specifically, variance VE HNW increased over 20%, while HNE decreased 30% 1990s. The effects ENSO IOD on have enhanced during both positive negative phases weakened phases. Wind Ekman pumping anomalies primary forces driving upwelling. However, for phase ENSO, large‐scale circulation dominate study highlights complexity mechanisms SCS importance predicting long‐term changes.

After Bakun proposed his hypothesis in 1990 regarding upwelling under climate change, researchers conducted intensive studies to obtain the trends, current status, and future predictions of upwelling. Numerous have mainly focused on four major areas, which are part Eastern Boundary Upwelling System (EBUS). However, despite its importance, little attention has been given marginal seas areas such as South China Sea (SCS), Arabian Sea, Baltic other small-scale locations. Here, we combined several published develop a new synthesis describing change impacts these areas. There had uncertainty intensification upwelling, depending locations, data type, method used. For SCS, Vietnam northern SCS showed intensifying while Taiwan Strait decreasing trend. Separate eastern Hainan (Somali Oman) contrasting results, where both increasing trends recorded. Like different results for they found negative along Polish, Latvian Estonian, positive Swedish coast Finnish Gulf Finland. While small scales La Guajira southern Java respectively. All limited suggest that need conduct lot more studies, including projection by using models understanding how responds change.

Under global warming, the frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves are increasing. However, inhibition atmospheric-forcing (AMHW) on upwelling their impacts ecosystems remain poorly understood. To address this issue, satellite sea surface temperature reanalysis data during 1998–2021 were analyzed in three distinct systems, northwestern South China Sea. The results showed that coastal tide-induced west (W) Hainan Island is primarily suppressed by enhanced stratification AMHW events, since insensitive to wind weakening. Contrarily, wind-driven east (E) northeast (NE) jointly regulated AMHW. Specifically, events have a stronger inhibitory effect phytoplankton growth NE than E. causes could be following: (1) background region E; thus, has higher susceptibility weakening; (2) begins when high-pressure system aligned with coastline upwelling. In region, location center occurrence positioned closer proximity area. Moreover, weakening enhancing changes development Before mature phase AMHW, inhibit growth, while shift stratification-dominated (>85%) occurs decline phase. This study suggests MHW great impact ecosystem, especially upwelling, which should given high attention under warming (with increasing future).

Submesoscale currents are known to be associated with strong vertical velocities (O (10) m/day), regulating the redistributions of energy and matter balances.
