The burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease is widely recognized. Main risk factors for severe disease, such as extreme ages, chronic cardiopulmonary conditions, and immunosuppression, typically coincide with poorer outcomes. While the majority RSV hospitalizations involve healthy children, a higher proportion hospitalized adults underlying conditions need intensive care. Presently, treatment primarily consists supportive measures. RSV-induced wheezing should be distinguished from tract thickening, without response to bronchodilators. Obstructive frequently overlaps viral pneumonia. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation high-flow oxygen therapy represented significant advancements in management children may also hold considerable importance specific phenotypes adults. Most infections manifest refractory hypoxemia necessitating more advanced ventilatory support and/or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy. Although bacterial co-infection rates are low, they have been associated worse Antibiotic prescription high. Accurately diagnosing co-infections remains challenge. Current evidence antibiotic stewardship policies advise against indiscriminate usage, even cases. role currently developing antiviral therapies will elucidated coming years, contingent upon success new vaccines immune passive strategies involving nirsevimab.

Abstract Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and infections of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) influenza viruses in hospitalized elderly patients with tract Suzhou City, China, to compare differences clinical economic burden associated these two infections. Methods In this prospective study, pathogenetic testing data for aged 60 years older were collected five hospitals through stratified cluster sampling from December 2023 May 2024. Comparative study on epidemic characteristics, features costs cases who infected RSV alone conducted. Results Among 1,894 included, positivity rate was 5.91% during 2023–2024 winter-spring season, while 9.61%. RSV-B predominant subtype RSV, A (primarily H3N2) dominant strain among influenza-positive cases. Compared alone, those had lower occurrence frequency fever (18.8% vs. 35.7%, P = 0.004), higher complications (70.8% 54.8%, 0.011), direct medical ($996.2 $841.1, 0.017) total ($1019.7 $888.1, 0.036). single infection is more common female ( 0.007) diabetic than infection. Conclusions During winter spring months, second most pathogen after adults Suzhou, China. Patients are likely develop have influenza. should be emphasized, especially patients.
