The discovery of a large number ancient ivory and artifacts in Sanxingdui site has elevated the importance relics to level exploring origins Chinese civilization. To clarify current preservation status decayed excavated from site, we have conducted an in-depth analysis structure-water state relationship unearthed No. 4 sacrificial pit (K4) as example. research indicates that is composed mixed phase hydroxyapatite [HA, Ca 10 (PO ) 6 (OH) 2 ] carbonated [CHA, 3 (CO ], which structure sheet-like needle-like crystals. organic fibrous protein within basically disappeared, resulting porous with porosity approximately 39.2%. pore size distribution concentrated range 2.5–100 nm, dominated by mesopores, handful micropores. These structures are occupied adsorbed water, free water bound exhibiting high content (35%–40%). molecules play filling supporting role structure. During dehydration deterioration process ivory, loss support results internal stress microstructure leading irreversible damage such peeling, pulverization cracking. correlation study between provides clues for tracing geological environment, rituals, ecological environments ivories times, serving crucial window into Earth’s history biological evolution.
