Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common gastrointestinal disorder linked to psychological distress and lifestyle factors. In Bangladesh, young adults may experience exacerbated IBS symptoms due particular hardships. This study aims evaluate the prevalence of its association with mental health status among private university students. A cross-sectional conducted between November 2023 May 2024 involved 550 students aged 19–40 years from three universities in Dhaka, Bangladesh selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected via in-person interviews using semi-structured questionnaire that included Rome III DASS-21 scale. Background Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) remains a critical public health challenge, particularly in aging populations and early childhood. Understanding long-term trends PEM burden is essential for guiding nutritional policy targeted interventions China. Methods Data were derived from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2021 period 1990–2021. Age-standardized incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), lived with disability (YLDs), lost (YLLs) rate analyzed using joinpoint regression age-period-cohort (APC) models to assess temporal trends. Decomposition analysis was employed attribute changes population aging, growth, epidemiological shifts. Bayesian APC (BAPC) modeling used project through 2030 by sex. Results In 2021, resulted over 22 million incident cases 213,682 DALYs China, males exhibiting higher age-standardized rates across all indicators. A bimodal age distribution observed, peaks children under 5 adults 80. From 1990 incidence prevalence increased until 2015 then declined, while mortality steadily decreased, among females. Compared global trends, China demonstrated greater reductions DALYs, but slight increase incidence. Joinpoint revealed shifts trend periods, marked rises between 2010 subsequent declines. indicated increasing recent cohorts aged ≥5 years, despite improvements young children. showed that growth change key drivers reduced both BAPC projections suggest continued indicators 2030, steeper decline females, although are expected maintain burden. Conclusions Although overall has improved, rising older highlight need age- sex-targeted interventions. Proactive strategies sustain progress address emerging demographic risks.
