Temporal trends and demographic influences on protein-energy malnutrition in China: a comprehensive analysis from 1990 to 2021

Background
Protein-energy
malnutrition
(PEM)
remains
a
critical
public
health
challenge,
particularly
in
aging
populations
and
early
childhood.
Understanding
long-term
trends
PEM
burden
is
essential
for
guiding
nutritional
policy
targeted
interventions
China.
Methods
Data
were
derived
from
the
Global
Burden
of
Disease
(GBD)
Study
2021
period
1990–2021.
Age-standardized
incidence,
prevalence,
mortality,
disability-adjusted
life
years
(DALYs),
lived
with
disability
(YLDs),
lost
(YLLs)
rate
analyzed
using
joinpoint
regression
age-period-cohort
(APC)
models
to
assess
temporal
trends.
Decomposition
analysis
was
employed
attribute
changes
population
aging,
growth,
epidemiological
shifts.
Bayesian
APC
(BAPC)
modeling
used
project
through
2030
by
sex.
Results
In
2021,
resulted
over
22
million
incident
cases
213,682
DALYs
China,
males
exhibiting

age-standardized
rates
across

indicators.

bimodal
age
distribution

1990

increased
until
2015
then
declined,
while
mortality
steadily
decreased,

trends,
China
demonstrated
greater
reductions
