Objective To characterize trends in otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat [ENT]) retractions, identify underlying causes, compare retraction rates with similar specialties. Design, Setting, Participants A scoping review of retracted articles published from January 1, 1974, through December 31, 2023, was carried out. Retraction data were obtained the Crossref/Retraction Watch database corresponding abstracts retrieved PubMed. Publication Scopus. All related to ENT identified. Main Outcomes Measures primary outcomes annual rate (proportion per total articles) reasons (categorized as intentional misconduct, procedural unintentional errors, or unknown). Secondary measures included time publication comparisons rates. Results Of 481 215 articles, 471 (0.10%) retracted. Retractions increased over time, peaking 2022 a 0.42%. Among most common misconduct (233 [49.50%]) (210 [44.60%]). first authors China accounted largest share (243 [51.60%]) these retractions. Basic science head neck cancer research represented subspecialty category (161 [34.20%]). median (IQR) 21.8 (10.8-55.3) months. Conclusions Relevance This analysis found that retractions literature have 5 decades, predominantly driven by misconduct. These findings highlight need enhanced oversight, training, editorial vigilance maintain integrity protect patient welfare.
