The pine caterpillar, Dendrolimus punctatus (Walker), is a notorious forest pest. An efficient and convenient synthesis of the sex pheromones this pest has been achieved. In our synthetic approach, Wittig coupling an aldehyde with ester-bearing phosphonium salt was used to construct Z-alkene, whereas E-alkene prepared via stereoselective reduction alkyne LiAlH4. would be useful for integrated management caterpillar.
