The ideas of self-observation and self-representation, the concomitant idea self-control, pervade both cognitive life sciences, arising in domains as diverse immunology robotics. Here, we ask a very general way whether, to what extent, these make sense. Using generic model physical interactions, prove theorem several corollaries that severely restrict applicable notions self-observation, self-control. We show, particular, adding observational, representational, or control capabilities meta-level component system cannot, even principle, lead complete representation whole. conclude self-representation can at best be heuristic, self models general, empirically tested by systems implement them.

Abstract This paper explores the relationship between intuition and flow from a neurodynamics perspective. Flow represent two cognitive phenomena rooted in nonconscious information processing; however, there are clear differences both their phenomenal characteristics and, more broadly, contribution to action cognition. We propose, extrapolating dual processing theory, that serves as rapid, decision-making process, while facilitates this process action, achieving optimal control performance without [conscious] deliberation. By exploring these points of convergence intuition, we also attempt reconcile apparent paradox presence enhanced flow, which is state heightened control. To do so, utilize revised dual-processing framework, allows us productively align differentiate (including flow). Furthermore, draw on recent work examining an active inference Our account not only heightens understanding human cognition consciousness, but raises new questions for future research, aiming deepen our comprehension how can be harnessed elevate wellbeing.

Abstract Tourette syndrome (TS) has been associated with a rich set of symptoms that are said to be uncomfortable, unwilled, and effortful manage. Furthermore, tics, the canonical characteristic TS, multifaceted, their onset maintenance is complex. A formal account integrates these features TS symptomatology within plausible theoretical framework currently absent from field. In this paper, we assess explanatory power hierarchical generative modelling in accounting for perspective active inference. We propose fourfold analysis sensory, motor, cognitive phenomena TS. Section 1, characterise tics as form action aimed at sensory attenuation . 2, introduce notion epistemic ticcing describe such behaviour search evidence there an agent (i.e., self) heart hierarchy. 3, both (sensation-free) nonepistemic (sensational) habitual behaviour. Finally, 4, involves inevitable conflict between distinguishable aspects selfhood; namely, minimal phenomenal sense self—which putatively underwritten by interoceptive inference—and explicit preferences constitute individual’s conceptual self. sum, aim provide empirically informed under inference, revealing continuity covert overt condition.
