Culturally contextualized suicide prevention for international students: new opportunities for research and practice

The
rising
incidence
of
suicide-related
thoughts
and
behaviors
among
international
students
presents
a
significant
public
health
challenge
growing
concern
college
campuses.
Current
intervention
strategies
often
rely
on
Western-centric
colonized
approaches
developed
tested
with
primarily
Western,
Educated,
Industrialized,
Rich
Democratic
(WEIRD)
samples.
Exclusion
historical
underrepresentation
ethnoracially
minoritized
groups
in
suicide
prevention
treatment
trials
create
gaps
advancing
our
science
because
they
miss
the
cultural
contextualization
crucial
for
effective
diverse
from
different
countries
origin.
To
address
limitations
these
strategies,
we
explored
existing
recommendations
through
lens
an
expanded
version
newly
Protective
Factors
Framework,
tailored
non-Western
perspectives.
We
propose
opportunities
enhancing
current
practices
point
to
promising
future
directions.
primary
areas
development
include:
(1)
bolstering
community
empowerment
ownership,
(2)
refining
mechanisms
change
encompass
multicultural
viewpoints,
(3)
focusing
implementation
thorough
evaluation
ongoing
refinement.
This
methodology
not
only
shows
promise
student
but
also

application
other
culturally
populations.

study
combined
suicide,
acculturation,
and
identity
change
frameworks
to
predict
the
likelihood
of
suicidality
endorsement
among
collegiate
international
students.
Participants
included
179
undergraduate
graduate
students
enrolled
at
a
large
Southern
university.
Ultimately,
depression,
perceived
burdensomeness,
ethnic
significantly
predicted
after
controlling
for
age,
time
spent
in
United
States,
gender,
alcohol
consumption.
Acculturation
stress
thwarted
belongingness
did
not
statistically
endorsement.
We
offer
implications
academic
communities
future
research
surrounding
suicide.
