Abstract This chapter focuses on reviewing the literature that provides reliable and quantitative information emerging contaminants (ECs) in wastewater, focusing their occurrence, detection removal efficiency using advanced analytical techniques. In addition, providing knowledge areas of ECs are non-regulated since environmental legislations policies being developed. Some classes include pharmaceuticals, nanomaterials, herbicides, personal care products microplastics many more. have been identified as an problem globally a result different compounds ranging from inorganic to organic which released into environment. commonly found aquatic environments main source municipal domestic discharge, hospital effluents, industrial wastewater agricultural run-off. The presence poses health problems ecological impacts associated with them. elevated concentration has necessitated need research varying techniques ways removal. Water contamination by is also attributed increase urbanization, industrialization activities. Current treatment plants inefficient they were not initially designed for ECs, these may transformation EC undetected unregulated. These exhibit similar toxicity parental while some recognized endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Due new introduced, there gap removal, thus demonstrating integrated approaches compliments screening target non-targeted biological assays. Development advancement enabled detection, identification trace (mg ng/L), development hybrid systems promising solutions. use nanomaterials phytoremediation widely studied good potential process remediating wastewater.

ABSTRACT Chemical pollutants and/or climate change have the potential to break down reproductive barriers between species and facilitate hybridization. Hybrid zones may arise in response environmental gradients secondary contact formerly allopatric populations, or due introduction of non‐native species. In freshwater ecosystems, field observations indicate that changes water quality chemistry, pollution change, are correlated with an increased frequency Physical chemical disturbances can alter sensory environment, thereby affecting visual communication among fish. Moreover, multiple compounds (e.g. pharmaceuticals, metals, pesticides, industrial contaminants) impair fish physiology, potentially phenotypic traits relevant for mate selection pheromone production, courtship, coloration). Although warming waters led documented range shifts, is ubiquitous few studies tested hypotheses about how these stressors hybridization what this means biodiversity conservation. Through a systematic literature review across disciplines (i.e. ecotoxicology evolutionary biology), we evaluate biological interactions, toxic mechanisms, roles physical change) disrupting preferences inducing interspecific Our study indicates change‐driven impact crucial choice thus could fishes ecosystems. To inform future conservation management, emphasize importance further research identify choice, understand mechanisms behind determine concentrations at which they occur, assess their on individuals, species, diversity Anthropocene.

Sertraline is widely prescribed to treat anxiety and depression. acts by blocking serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine transporters systems has been detected in surface waters globally, where it may impact fish behavior. We classified zebrafish personality on three behavioral axes, boldness, anxiety, sociability, assigning as either high or low each category. The were exposed nominal concentrations of 0, 5, 50, 500, 5000 ng/L sertraline (measured concentrations: <10, 21.3, 370, 2200 ng/L, respectively) assess changes sociability after 7 28 days. also measured shoaling behavior response an alarm cue, determined the gut microbiome a subset fish. After days there was no overall effect but interaction between initial sex, with stronger females low-boldness personality. reduced all treatments compared control, again Fish that low-sociability responded more strongly sertraline. days, concentration (2200 measured) showed higher than controls, pattern retained. similar patterns observed, variation. There only weak association Overall, study highlights importance considering behavior, which can affect pollutants. AbstractAbstractPharmaceuticals are frequently detected in natural and wastewater bodies, very important environmental toxicology because of their stable nature. Advanced oxidation methods used to remove contaminants great benefit, especially removing pharmaceuticals unsuitable for biodegradation. In this study, imipramine was degraded by anodic subcritical water oxidation, which advanced methods. The determination degradation products performed Q-TOF LC/MS analysis. genotoxicity cytotoxicity the samples were determined vivo Allium Cepa method. Among samples, lowest obtained after using 400 mA current, 420 min time. No cytotoxic effect observed any sample. However, when 10 mM hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant at 150 °C reaction time 90 min, sample showed a genotoxic effect. results study that it is crucial evaluate toxicity levels preferred imipramine. optimum conditions both can be preliminary step biological imipramine. Keywords: Anodic oxidationsubcritical oxidationallium cepa assaycytotoxicitygenotoxicity AcknowledgmentsWe want thank Dr. Asena Ayça Özdemir (Mersin University Faculty Medicine, Department Biostatistics Medical Informatics) her contribution statistical analysis.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict interest reported authors.Data availability statementThe authors confirm data supporting findings available within article [and/or] its supplementary materials.Additional informationFundingThe author(s) there no funding associated with work featured article.
