Animal welfare denotes how an animal experiences their life. It represents the overall mental of and is a subjective concept that cannot be directly measured. Instead, indicators are used to cautiously infer from resource provisions, management factors, animal-based measures. The Five Domains Model holistic structured framework for collating these assessing welfare. Contemporary approaches consider animals can given opportunities have positive experiences. However, uncertainty surrounding inferred has resulted in risk-averse scientists returning relative safety positivism. This meant aspects often referred as ‘wants’. Recent discussions in animal welfare have emphasised the importance of agency—the ability animals to make choices and exert control over their environment a way that aligns with needs preferences. In this paper, we discuss agency for examine how use some types animal–computer interaction can enable exercise more captive environments through increased choice control, cognitive challenge, social interactions; as well considering potential limitations such efforts.

The involvement of animals in research procedures that can harm them and to which they are deemed unable consent raises fundamental ethical dilemmas. While current review processes emphasize the application 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement), grounded a human-centered utilitarian approach, comprehensive also involves harm-benefit analysis consideration wider issues. Nevertheless, our knowledge, approaches still needed facilitate integrative assessment iterative revision designs improve their value or identify cases using is irremediably unethical. Additionally, frameworks lacking explicitly include an animal-centered perspective into process beyond welfare concerns, failing cover broader considerations (such as consent). In previous work we proposed Animal-Centered Research framework (ACRf) comprising four principles ( relevance , impartiality ) could help researchers bodies apprise from perspective. Studies on animal cognition, emotion, language, culture, and politics have shown that non-human animals are agents who engage in self-willed actions an interest shaping their own lives. In today's world, however, animals' lives affected significantly by circumstances humans created, including farming systems. The current paper explores how the agency of cows relates to technology reporting fieldwork performed Dutch dairy sector. Multi-species ethnography was used as a flexible methodology allowed readjusting questions methods our research developed. first phase, observations informal talks were held six farms which had been recruited basis convenience sampling each visited for one full day. second five more selected one-day visits through theoretical snowball sampling, farm repeatedly in-depth observations. observational strategies included following individual actors (farmers, or technologies) documenting interactions with other actors; participating daily routines such feeding roughage scraping manure; witnessing cows' responses non-routine events introduction new technologies cows; sometimes waiting notable occurrences just 'hanging out' cows. Observations this phase complemented small number interviews farmers, cow shed designers, developers. Our main conclusion is presupposed mediated technologies. Dairy presuppose 'scripts' 'programs action' they enforce: require act specific ways, anticipate some ways could disrupt technological routines, (successfully unsuccessfully) attempt ensure cooperation appealing wants desires ability learn. thus assign not only perform 'metabolic labour', but also capacity purposively learning abilities. While user-centered design approaches stemming from the human-computer interaction (HCI) field have notably improved welfare of companion, service, and zoo animals, their application in farm animal settings remains limited. This shortfall has catalyzed emergence animal-computer (ACI), a discipline extending technology’s reach to multispecies user base involving both animals humans. Despite significant strides other sectors, adaptation HCI ACI (collectively HACI) welfare—particularly for dairy cows, swine, poultry—lags behind. Our paper explores potential HACI within precision livestock farming (PLF) artificial intelligence (AI) enhance individual address unique challenges these settings. It underscores necessity transitioning productivity-focused animal-centered methods, advocating paradigm shift that emphasizes as integral sustainable practices. Emphasizing ‘One Welfare’ approach, this discussion highlights how integrating technologies not only benefits health, productivity, overall well-being but also aligns with broader societal, environmental, economic benefits, considering pressures farmers face. perspective is based on insights one-day workshop held June 24, 2024, which focused advancing welfare.
