Animal welfare assessments have struggled to investigate the emotional states of animals while focusing solely on available empirical evidence. Qualitative Behavioural Assessment (QBA) may provide insights into an animal's subjective experiences without compromising scientific rigor. Rather than assessing explicit, physical behaviours (i.e., what are doing, such as swimming or feeding), QBA describes and quantifies overall expressive manner in which execute those how relaxed agitated they appear). While has been successfully applied a variety species, its application within aquaculture remains largely unexplored. This study aimed assess QBA's effectiveness capturing changes behaviour Atlantic salmon following exposure stressful challenge. Nine tanks juvenile were video-recorded every morning for 15 min over 7-day period, middle challenge (intrusive sampling) was conducted salmon. The resultant 1-min, 63 video clips then semi-randomised avoid predictability treatment bias scorers. Twelve salmon-industry professionals generated list 16 qualitative descriptors (e.g., relaxed, agitated, stressed) after viewing unrelated video-recordings depicting varying characteristics different contexts. A group 5 observers, with varied experience farming, subsequently scored each clip using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Principal Components Analysis (correlation matrix, no rotation) used identify perceived patterns across video-clips, revealed 4 dimensions explaining 74.5% variation between clips. PC1, ranging from 'relaxed/content/positive active' 'unsettled/stressed/spooked/skittish' explained highest percentage (37%). scores video-clips PC2, PC4 achieved good inter- intra-observer reliability. Linear Mixed Effects Models, controlled observer PC1 scores, showed significant difference before sampling (p = 0.03), being more stressed afterwards. also correlated positively darting (r 0.42, p < 0.001). These results first report sensitivity putatively challenge, demonstrating potential indicator aquaculture.

ABSTRACT The stress‐coping ability (SCA) is one of the core aspects fish welfare and vital importance for production in aquaculture industry fitness hatchery release. Environmental enrichment (EE), a method introducing external stimuli into husbandry environment, has been recently proposed to improve SCA, but present experimental evidence mixed, reasons these discrepancies are unclear. Here, we conducted global meta‐analysis using data set that consists 1786 cases from 107 studies across 42 species solve this problem. Overall, found enriched had significantly higher SCA than control fish, reflected either basal stress levels or responses. Meta‐regression analyses showed specific subgroups type, developmental stage, category, duration, place, sample tissue indicator system significant positive EE effects on SCA. Multi‐model inference indicated system, characteristic mode important drivers high heterogeneity among effect sizes. Conservation aquaculture offers important tools to secure sustainable animal supplies for human use. However, intensive practices are increasingly raising concerns about the welfare conditions of farmed animals, which typically face high mortality rates due diseases, cannibalism, and aggression. Here we focus on European lobster (Homarus gammarus), an economically ecologically decapod species that has been subjected conservation programs decades. While standard husbandry procedures result into large numbers juvenile lobsters produced released, it remains poorly known whether such settings alter development behavioural life-history traits ecological importance animals survive in wild. The Australasian snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) is a candidate for offshore aquaculture in New Zealand. culture of requires knowledge the best locations farms and key variable water temperature. oxygen- capacity-limited thermal tolerance (OCLTT) hypothesis suggests fish performance optimised at temperature that maximises absolute aerobic scope (AAS), whereas 'multiple performances–multiple optima' (MPMO) idea, AAS other measures can have different optimal temperatures. Therefore, applicability OCLTT was tested by holding juveniles 15, 18, 21, or 24°C two months constructing curves (TPCs) specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) AAS, an assessment welfare indicators. We hypothesised would apply with all TPCs 21°C. However, showed no discernible peak (although lower 15 than 18°C); SGR FCR improved non-linearly temperature; indicators varied little This lack limitation evidence MPMO are amenable to across significant range warmer likely providing highest levels productivity maintained welfare.
