China is one of the world’s largest agricultural producers, and its carbon footprint (CF) a major contributor to global warming. However, long-term annual changes in CF underlying driving factors remain largely unknown, compromising scientific basis for effective reduction sustainable agriculture management. To this end, we used life cycle assessment (LCA) method statistical data calculate CFs China. We then adopted linear regression slope Moran’s I analyze temporal trends spatial clustering characteristics revealed correlations between main drivers CFs. The results showed that total (TCF) farmland-averaged (FCF) crop production both increased first decreased from 2000 2020, with turning point 2015. Overall, TCF by 6.82% (3022.16 × 104 t CO2 eq), while FCF slightly 0.004% (0.01 eq/ha). Both heterogeneity, high values east low west, components has weakened over time. Fertilizer (39.26%) paddy (27.38%) were contributors TCF. Driver analysis found grain yield was positively correlated most provinces, indicating continuous increase brought greater pressure on emission Agricultural stakeholders should optimize planting structures patterns improve resource-use efficiencies through technological management innovation adapt these threats achieve low-carbon agriculture. findings our research can aid spatiotemporal estimation driver provide decision-making support practices.
