More than 4 billion people yearly suffer from global water scarcity amid climate change, rapid population growth, and growing industrial activity. Due to the high concentrations of recalcitrant organic compounds, refractory wastewater is highly resistant conventional biological treatment represents a critical obstacle for reuse sustainable management. A systematic literature review 35 peer-reviewed articles published 2010 2025 provided evaluate utilization sustainability potential advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) treating wastewater. Using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses) framework, assesses numerous AOPs, such as ozonation, UV/H2O2, Fenton reactions, photocatalysis, while also evaluating their performance, efficiency, integration ability. The results show that AOPs demonstrate pollutant removal rates often greater 96%, reduce sludge formation, improve effluent biodegradability. They can be applied at different stages, combined with any renewable energy systems, therefore scale sustained, thereby aligning UN Sustainable Development Goal 6. provide technically feasible eco-friendly solution higher quality treatment. In face increasing pressure on resources, urgent need resource management, this study offers valuable insights policymakers practitioners aiming adopt resilient circular strategies water.

Published: May 4, 2025

Abstract The performance of a continuous pilot‐scale UV/H 2 O photoreactor for the degradation aqueous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is studied. process variables include PVA feed concentration, inlet H and hydraulic retention time (HRT), ranging from 20 to 100 mg/L, 115 5 25 min, respectively. Interactive effects input on percentage total organic carbon (TOC) removal, residual effluent pH are analyzed using Latin hypercube sampling (LHS), quadratic modelling, response surface methodology (RSM) in MATLAB Design Expert. analysis determined optimal operating conditions 22 mg/L feed, 15 24 min HRT, yielding maximum TOC removal 51.51% concentration mg/L. Despite previous studies, online sensors used experimental setup. A key novelty this study identification validation reliable indicators parameters that cannot be measured online, enabling real‐time monitoring control. Specifically, UV absorbance solutions at 254 nm (UVA) exhibits strong dependence making it indicator levels feed. Additionally, indicating linear correlation between %TOC with an R value 0.9886, suggests could serve as performance. These findings highlight potential optimization systems large‐scale wastewater treatment applications.

Published: July 24, 2024

The treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater is a critical environmental challenge, necessitating efficient removal methods. This study investigates the adsorption synthetic multicomponent (SPWW) containing methanol, benzene, methylene chloride, 4-aminophenol, aniline, and sulfanilic acid onto charcoal-based activated carbon (AC). Batch experiments were conducted to effects pH, contact time, initial concentrations adsorbates. results show that longer time higher increase capacity, whereas pH shows no significant effect on capacity at value less than 10, eliminating need for adjustment reducing process costs. pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetic model best describes process, with intraparticle diffusion playing key role, as confirmed by Weber Morris (W-M) model. Six models describing equilibrium are applied experimental data, their parameters estimated nonlinear regression Among isotherm models, Langmuir-Freundlich provides fit, suggesting multilayer heterogeneous granular (GAC) surface. maximum be 522.3 mgC/gAC. Experimental confirm GAC could effectively treat highly concentrated wastewater, achieving up 52% efficiency.
