Melatonin
plays
a
pivotal
role
in
the
regulation
of
biological
rhythms,
beginning
during
prenatal
development
through
maternal
signalling
and
continuing
postnatally
via
breast
milk.
In
neonates,
whose
circadian
systems
are
functionally
immature,
melatonin
serves
as
critical
entraining
agent,
facilitating
synchronisation
sleep–wake
cycle,
supporting
neurodevelopmental
processes,
enhancing
immune
system
maturation.
Breast
milk
demonstrates
distinct
diurnal
variations
concentration,
alongside
other
bioactive
components,
establishing
it
vital
chrononutritional
medium.
This
rhythmic
delivery
is
particularly
significant
for
preterm
infants,
who
lack
sufficient
endogenous
production
especially
reliant
on
exogenous
sources
entrainment.
Several
factors,
including
mode
delivery,
health,
alignment,
handling
or
processing
expressed
milk,
may
influence
content
its
bioavailability.
Disruption
