Although a rich academic literature examines the use of fake news by foreign actors for political manipulation, there is limited research on potential intervention in capital markets. To address this gap, we construct comprehensive database (negative) regarding U.S. firms scraping prominent fact-checking sites. We identify accounts that spread Twitter (now X) and machine-learning techniques to infer geographic locations these spreaders. Our analysis reveals corporate more likely than non-fake be accounts.
