The recent COVID-19 pandemic sparked discussions and highlighted significant gaps on the most appropriate infection prevention control (IPC) measures when dealing with acute respiratory infections (ARIs). This narrative review aims to provide an overview of existing international national guidelines IPC epidemic pandemic-prone ARIs in healthcare settings. WHO has recently produced a report proposing updated terminology for pathogens. One key outcomes this consultation was adoption term 'infectious particles' (IRPs). According report, IRPs are defined as infectious particles that can be expired from infected person through activities like breathing, talking, singing, coughing, sneezing, or even spitting. Most notably, there is no longer clear traditional distinction between droplet aerosol based cut-off particle size, but rather continuum sizes IRPs. Among other recommendations, all place emphasis use standard transmission-based precautions viruses. It important assess how new proposed pathogens may affect current measures.
