Abstract Background Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) impacts hippocampal structure and function, contributing to deficits in memory decision-making affected individuals. Here, we evaluate anomalies children with PAE an unexposed comparison group using advanced MRI methods that characterize curvature thickness. Methods Participants, ages 8 16 years, included ( n = 48) 46) who underwent a dysmorphology exam, neuropsychological assessment, scan. Height, weight, head circumference, dysmorphic facial features were evaluated. Of those PAE, 4.2% had fetal syndrome (FAS), 22.9% partial FAS, 72.9% alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder. Neuropsychological testing measures of intelligence functioning. T1-weighted anatomical data processed the Hippunfold pipeline, which “unfolds” complex onto template surface provides thickness gyrification/curvature at each vertex. Permutation Analysis Linear Models (PALM) was used test for differences (PAE vs. comparison) gyrification vertex also assess correlations cognitive Results There significant regional across bilateral hippocampi, showing substantially thinner tissue less than group, especially CA1 subiculum regions. For subicular (bilateral) associated lower IQ. Also episodic performance thinness right hippocampus, region. no patterns functioning individuals group. Conclusions We novel method The suggest disrupts development, impacting both early-stage folding its ultimate demonstrate these developmental have functional consequences terms core functions as well global intellectual PAE.
