Despite recent advances, the origin and utility of consciousness remains under debate. Using an evolutionary perspective on consciousness, this review elaborates promising theoretical background suggested in temporospatial theory which outlines world-brain alignment as a critical predisposition for controlling behavior adaptation. Our brain processes the different timescales of our environment's temporal input stochastics. Is such a processing mechanism key for consciousness? To address this research question, we calculated measures on shorter (alpha peak frequency, APF) and longer (autocorrelation window, ACW) resting-state high-density EEG (256 channels) recordings compared them across consciousness levels (awake/conscious, ketamine sevoflurane anaesthesia, unresponsive wakefulness, minimally conscious state). We replicate extend previous findings of: (i) significantly ACW values, consistently over all states unconsciousness, as measured with ACW-0 (an unprecedented version well-know ACW-50); (ii) slower APF frequency sliding, in four unconscious states. Most importantly, report highly significant correlation state, while their relationship is disrupted In sum, demonstrate relevance brain's capacity (APF) (ACW) - including consciousness. Albeit indirectly, e.g., through analysis electrophysiological activity at rest, supports temporo-spatial alignment to stochastics, relating neural timescales, one predisposing factor

Disorders of consciousness represent an efficient way to test theories consciousness' (ToCs) predictions. So far, ToCs have mostly focused on disorders quantitative awareness such as coma, vegetative state, spatial neglect and hemianopia. Psychiatric disorders, by contrast, received little attention, leaving their contribution research almost unexplored. Therefore, this paper aims assess the relation between psychiatric - that is, extent which current can account for symptomatology. First, I review direct indirect evidence linking each ToC psychiatry disorders. Dreams are one of the most bizarre and least understood states consciousness. Bridging gap between brain phenomenology (un)conscious experience, we propose Topographic-dynamic Re-organization model (TRoD). Topographically, dreams characterized by a shift towards increased activity connectivity in default-mode network (DMN) while they reduced central executive network, including dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (except lucid dreaming). This topographic re-organization is accompanied dynamic changes; slower frequencies longer timescales. puts dynamically an intermediate position awake state NREM 2/SWS sleep. TRoD proposes that DMN leads to abnormal spatiotemporal framing input processing both internally- externally-generated inputs (from body environment). In dreams, away from temporal segregation integration results often highly self-centric mental contents as well hallucinatory-like states. We conclude topography dynamics core features TroD, which may provide connection neural activity, e.g., experience during their "common currency".

Abstract Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have demonstrated that intrinsic neuronal timescales (INT) undergo modulation by external stimulation during consciousness. It remains unclear if INT keep the ability for significant stimulus-induced primary unconscious states, such as sleep. This fMRI analysis addresses this question via a dataset comprises an awake resting-state plus rest and stimulus states We analyzed measured temporal autocorrelation supported median frequency (MF) in frequency-domain. Our results were replicated using biophysical model. There two main findings: (1) prolonged while MF decreased from to N2 resting-state, (2) shortened increased auditory The model these demonstrating slowed populations simulate sleep compared state. Abstract Does artificial intelligence (AI) exhibit consciousness or self? While this question is hotly debated, here we take a slightly different stance by focusing on those features that make possible both, namely basic fundamental subjectivity. Learning from humans and their brain, first ask what mean Subjectivity manifest in the perspectiveness mineness of our experience which, ontologically, can be traced to point view. Adopting non-reductive neurophilosophical strategy, assume view exhibits two layers, most neuroecological higher order mental layer. The layer mediated timescales world as further evidenced empirical data sense self. Are there corresponding shared with AI mineness? Discussing current neuroscientific evidence, deny view, let alone mineness. We therefore conclude that, per state, does not subjectivity henceforth no self models such ChatGPT similar technologies.
