Abstract The Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP) 21 in December 2015 established Nationally Determined Contributions toward reduction greenhouse gas emissions. In the years since COP21, it has become increasingly evident that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies must be deployed immediately to stabilize concentration atmospheric gases and avoid major climate change impacts. Biochar is a carbon-rich material formed by high-temperature conversion biomass under reduced oxygen conditions, its production one few CDR methods can at scale large enough counteract effects within next decade. Here we provide generalized framework for quantifying potential contribution biochar make achieving national emissions goals, assuming use only sustainably supplied biomass, i.e., residues from existing agricultural, livestock, forestry wastewater treatment operations. Our results illustrate significant role play world-wide strategies, with 6.23 ± 0.24% total GHG 155 countries covered based on 2020 data over 100-year timeframe, more than 10% 28 countries. Concentrated regions high relative were identified South America, northwestern Africa eastern Europe. Graphical abstract

The pyrolysis of sewage sludge to produce biochar is a promising method for end-treatment. Key parameters influencing properties include temperature, heat transfer rate, residence time, additives, and raw material types. Sludge-based (SBC) features porous structure, aromatic compound composition, high absorbency, stable chemical properties, large specific surface area, numerous functional groups, making it suitable environmental applications such as soil remediation water quality improvement. However, SBC alone can pose risk due excessive heavy metal content. Co-pyrolysis biomass with has been shown mitigate this by fixing metals reducing their accumulation in biochar. Research indicates that co-pyrolysis produces superior including larger better pore more greater pollutant adsorption capacity compared alone. Thus, sludge-biomass significant potential overcome the limitations single sludge-based biochar, facilitating large-scale production application management.

Sewage sludge (SS) is an environmental issue due to its high organic content and ability release hazardous substances. Most of the treatments available are biological, thermal hydrolysis, mechanical (ultrasound, pressure, lysis), chemical with oxidation (mainly ozonation), alkali pre-treatments. Other treatment methods include landfill, wet oxidation, composting, drying, stabilization, incineration, pyrolysis, carbonization, liquefaction, gasification, torrefaction. Some these SS disposal damage ecosystem underutilize potential resource value SS. The rapid growth of urban populations necessitates the development more efficient and environmentally sustainable methods for waste treatment resource recovery. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has emerged as a promising technology converting organic into bio-crude oil. In this study, HTL products various fractions (Fat, oil, grease (FOG), food waste, primary secondary sludge, digestate) produced or handled by four wastewater plants in Denmark were analysed. Additionally, effect mixing was investigated. experiments conducted at temperatures 300, 325, 350 °C, with residence time 20 min dry matter content 16.7%. highest yields obtained temperature 325 °C all feedstocks except FOG (300 °C). wastes resulted positive synergistic effect, presenting an energy recovery between 62 76% higher than expected due to interactions feedstock's biochemical composition. Based on composition fraction, two models are proposed prediction yields, error 4 5% absolute terms. addition, important process water parameters, well nutrient heavy metal load solid residues analysed discussed, giving comprehensive overview potential different plant sludges.
