Second-generation (2G) bioethanol production, derived from lignocellulosic biomass, has emerged as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels by addressing growing energy demands and environmental concerns. Fungal sugar transporters (STs) play critical role in this process, enabling the uptake of monosaccharides such glucose xylose, which are released during enzymatic hydrolysis biomass. This mini-review explores recent advances structural functional characterization STs filamentous fungi yeasts, highlighting their roles processes cellulase induction, carbon catabolite repression, signaling pathways. The review also emphasizes potential genetic engineering enhance specificity efficiency these transporters, overcoming challenges substrate competition limited pentose metabolism industrial strains. By integrating latest research findings, work underscores pivotal fungal optimizing production advancing bioeconomy. Future prospects for transport systems implications biotechnology discussed.

The global transition to a sustainable bioeconomy requires the engagement of renewable and cost-effective substrates obtain valuable bio-based products. Inulin-rich plant materials have promising applications in white biotechnology. This review evaluates potential converting inulin through an integrated biorefinery into high-value products by microbial fermentation. It describes methods for raw biomass pretreatment, possibilities simultaneous saccharification fermentation (SSF), use wild-type genetically modified strains. bioconversion enables efficient synthesis biofuels such as ethanol, butanol, 2,3-butanediol biochemicals lactic, citric, poly-γ-glutamic acid. By analyzing advances hydrolysis methods, engineering, bioprocess optimization approaches, this highlights broad applicability context multifunctional, substrate, which contributes development circular economy.
