Abstract Little is known about whether withdrawal-like symptoms manifest when regular pornography users attempt to abstain from pornography. The present study used a randomized controlled design examine (1) negative abstinence effects that may be potentially reflective of withdrawal-related non-clinical sample for 7-day period and (2) these would only (or more strongly) those with higher levels problematic use (PPU). A total 176 undergraduate students (64.2% female) who were (defined as having ≥ three times week in the past 4 weeks) randomly assigned an group (instructed 7 days, n = 86) or control (free watch usual, 90). Participants completed measures craving, positive affect, withdrawal at baseline each night period. Contrary confirmatory hypotheses, there no significant main (abstinence vs. control) × PPU interaction on any outcome measures, controlling scores. These findings indicate evidence was found abstaining participants, this not dependent level PPU. However, exploratory analyses showed three-way (group 4-week frequency [FPU]) where effect craving high once FPU reached threshold daily use. While should interpreted caution, they suggest could combination FPU—a hypothesis warrants investigation future prospective studies.
