Green macroalgae bloom (GMB), with the dominant species of Ulva prolifera, has regularly occurred since 2007 along China coast. Although disaster prevention and control achieved favorable results in 2020, satellite-observed GMB annual maximum coverage (AMC) rebounded sharply 2021 to an unprecedented level. The reasons for this rebound significant interannual variability over past 15 years are still open questions. Here, by using long-term time-series (2007–2022) optical Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite observations (1000+ scenes), meteorological data water quality statistics, mechanism analysis was performed exploring effects from natural factors human activities. Two key determinants AMC successfully identified numerous potential which distribution a area (the Subei Shoal) during critical period (from April May 20) nutrient availability. Furthermore, these two parameters, novel model prediction (R2 = 0.87, p < 0.01) is proposed independently validated, can reasonably explain (2014–2021) agree well latest observation 2022 (percentage difference 12%). Finally, suggestions future alleviation. This work may aid management measure optimization.

Green tides are a serious global ecological disaster; the largest occur in Southern Yellow Sea (SYS). Early-stage green SYS composed of four species (Ulva prolifera, Ulva flexuosa, linza, and compressa). We found that U. aragoensis is constituent based on molecular data. Furthermore, this study re-evaluated proportion it was more prevalent micro-propagules cultured from surface seawater during an early-stage tide 2021. The internal transcribed spacers, tufA, 18S, rbcL, large subunit, psbA, rps2-trnL gene sequences were compared; tufA rbcL most suitable DNA barcodes for distinguishing aragoensis. A haplotype analysis floating its performed to correlation between macroalgae micro-propagules; close similarities occurred them. This further clarified composition provided reference assessing relationship macroalgae.

Abstract Large-scale Ulva prolifera green tides have successively occurred for 16 years (2007–2022) in the Yellow Sea (YS), and different life stages of U. play critical roles regulating occurrence development tides. U . microalgae a similar niche seawater, but their potential interactions are not yet clearly understood. In this study, we investigated competition relationship between two at five controlled laboratory experiments. The results showed that one Alexandrium tamarense , can only inhibit gametes first settlement stage. Inversely, germinated begin to show negative effects on multiple ways subsequent four stages, growth inhibition rates among these ranged from 19 100%. complex may influence formation Meanwhile, ecological consequences phytoplankton, even decreased microalgal blooms YS need be further evaluated.
