Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body that has recently been found to have antiviral properties. However, its mechanisms are not entirely understood. Using Caco-2 cells, we developed gastrointestinal organoid model investigate impact of melatonin on cellular culture response Poly I:C-induced viral inflammation in tract. was different effect when applied as pretreatment before induction or treatment after it. I:C stimulation did protect organoids from size reduction but enhanced cell proliferation, especially lower (1 and 10 µM) concentrations were used. On other hand, with helped maintain while reducing proliferation. In pretreated reduced IFNLR1 expression found, increased production cytokines, such IFNλ1 STAT1-3, prevent apoptosis. The findings this study emphasize importance type III IFNs defense epithelial cells shed more light properties potential therapeutic substance.
