Gyrophoric acid (GA) is a secondary metabolite of various lichens. It exhibits biological activities in vitro, but only one study has been carried out vivo. Because our previous showed that GA stimulates neurogenesis healthy rats, the current aimed to explore potential during stress-induced depressive-like states male Wistar rats. In experiment, pregnant females were used. last week pregnancy, subjected restraint stress. After birth, progeny aged 60 days stressed repeatedly. The males divided into three groups: control animals (CTR; n = 10), with depression-like state (DEP; and GA-treated (GA; 10). treated (per os 10 mg/kg) daily for month, starting from 60th postnatal day. Our results indicate acts as an antioxidant, shown by lowered ROS level leukocytes (p < 0.01). Moreover, it prolonged time spent open arms elevated plus maze 0.001). Concomitantly, stimulation proliferative activity hippocampal regions was seen (hilus p 0.01; subgranular zone 0.001) when compared DEP males. Additionally, number mature neurons CA1 region hippocampus increased markedly 0.01), indicating role maturation process neurons. Thus, points anxiolytic/antidepressant GA. However, future studies are needed this complex area.
