Drought stress induces a range of physiological changes in plants, including oxidative damage. Ascorbic acid (AsA), commonly known as vitamin C, is vital non-enzymatic antioxidant capable scavenging reactive oxygen species and modulating key processes crops under abiotic stresses like drought. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), predominantly cultivated drought-prone regions, offers an ideal model for studying drought tolerance. We explored the potential AsA phenotyping to enhance tolerance chickpea. Using automated phenomics facility monitor daily soil moisture levels, we developed protocol screen chickpea genotypes endogenous content. The results showed that accumulation peaked at 30% field capacity (FC)—when measured between 11:30 am 12:00 noon—coinciding with maximum solar radiation (32 °C). this protocol, screened 104 diverse two control varieties genetic variability depletion, identifying groups differing levels. Field trials over consecutive years revealed higher content, such BDNG-2018-15 PG-1201-20, exhibited enhanced minimal reductions yield compared standard cultivars. These AsA-rich hold promise valuable resources breeding programs aimed improving
