Hyperbaric Oxygen in Otorhinolaryngology: Current Concepts in Management and Therapy

Background:
In
otorhinolaryngology
and
head
neck
surgery,
oxygen
is
a
therapeutic
tool
used
for
various
pathologies.
Oxidative
stress
the
imbalance
between
production
of
free
radicals
(ROS)
antioxidant
capacity
body,
which
can
represent
pathogenesis
several
pathologies
or
contribute
to
their
worsening.
This
narrative
review
aims
analyze
benefits,
indications,
side
effects
hyperbaric
therapy
(HBOT)
in
different
disorders.
Methods:
The
search
was
carried
out
on
multiple
electronic
databases
such
as
PubMed
Google
Scholar,
prospective,
randomized,
reviewed
studies
were
analyzed
from
January
1982
February
2024.
Results
Conclusions:
most
common
tools
manage
oxidative
ear,
nose,
throat
(ENT)
field
are
continuous
positive
airway
pressure
(CPAP)
HBOT.
A
ENT
pathology,
while
latter
be
osteoradionecrosis
treatment
cancer
patients,
infections,
malignant
external
otitis,
reconstruction,
facial
cosmetic
among
patients
with
sudden
sensorineural
hearing
loss.
From
our
analysis,
it
emerged
that
HBOT
currently
effective
pathologies’
treatment,
alone
association
other
treatments;
guarantee
functional
recovery
healing
depending
type
pathology
its
severity.
