Abstract Transitional ecosystems like coastal lagoons provide numerous ecosystem services. However, they are increasingly threatened by plastic pollution, particularly microplastics (MPs). Despite growing concerns, the occurrence and distribution of MPs in Türkiye’s lagoon systems remain largely unknown. This study aims to assess abundance, composition, seasonal variability surface water sediments five located northeastern Mediterranean region Türkiye. Additionally, potential MP sources their environmental implications addressed. Water sediment samples were collected from Akyatan, Tuzla, Ağyatan, Çamlık, Yelkoma Lagoons during November June periods. extracted using density separation digestion techniques, quantified via stereo microscopy, characterized through µ-Raman spectroscopy identify polymer composition. A total 15,526 recovered, with significantly higher concentrations (47.5 ± 4.02 MPs/L) compared (17.0 2.57 MPs/L; p < 0.05). varied among lagoons, Tuzla exhibiting highest levels water, while Akyatan showed contamination. Fibers dominant type, followed fragments films. analysis identified polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyester (PES) as most common polymers, indicating agricultural runoff, fishing activities, mismanaged waste primary sources. provides first comprehensive assessment pollution Turkish highlighting spatial differences contamination levels. The results highlight pressing need for improved management policies conservation strategies mitigate these ecologically economically significant systems.

The nearshore zone turns out to be the area with higher concentration of plastic debris and, for this reason, it is important know processes that affect transport and fate type litter. This study focuses on investigating dynamics various types under several hydrodynamic conditions primarily induced by waves. 2D tests were carried at Hydraulic Laboratory University Messina reproducing main phenomena occurred during wave propagation a planar beach. More than 200 different tested changing characteristics, water depth, characteristics (density shape), roughness fixed bottom. In general, can observed reduction in particle displacement occurs due to: i) decrease steepness; ii) an increase depth; iii) size; iv) density. However, experimental investigation shows some bed roughness, even when hydraulically smooth, alter these results. data analysis identified criterion predicting short-term action. determine equilibrium conditions, based empirical relationship, takes into account slope, weight debris.
