Abstract South Africa's dualistic agricultural sector consists of many smallholders that operate adjacent to dominant commercial producers. While the smallholder contributes food security, households depend primarily on market consumption. Poverty reduction is constrained when have limited access markets, technology, or cheap capital. We collate remotely sensed data from African National Land Cover map and moderate‐resolution imaging spectroradiometer monitor land use changes as country entered coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) lockdown. Production growth sustained aggregate but hunger rose in poorest households. This inequality security also reflected growing inequalities production. Commercially cultivated areas grew significantly, with more modest gains areas. Commercial farmers were better positioned expand capital a low interest rate environment during COVID‐19 crisis.
