Research increasingly highlights jellyfish as a sustainable alternative to other animal species, particularly for its collagen, which has versatile applications in blue biotechnology. This review explores the properties of jellyfish-derived extraction techniques, and diverse industrial based on current scientific literature. With particular focus research Mediterranean Sea, we underscore role order Rhizostomeae species with high collagen content provide an overview main sources harvesting, including active fishing, by-catch, aquaculture. In basin, blooming Rhizostoma pulmo, Cotylorhiza tuberculata, Rhopilema nomadica represent valuable opportunity harness their nutraceutical benefits, well potential development biomaterials tissue engineering regenerative medicine. Although fishing is not yet well-established region, ongoing collaborative projects fishermen’s guilds are focused promoting circular economy strategies valorize innovative resource. Additionally, aquaculture emerges promising ensuring supply, Cassiopea spp. demonstrating significant biotechnological applications.

Jellyfish’s potential for feed production remains largely unexplored and research on their nutritional benefits in aquafeeds is still limited. This systematic review analyzed the composition of jellyfish its as a sustainable aquaculture ingredient, evaluating advantages limitations. Data from 65 studies were categorized into proximate composition, amino acids, fatty mineral content. Good proportion methionine lysine, high amount collagen-derived acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline), presence taurine beneficial long-chain (mainly ARA), well richness minerals such Na, K, Cl, Mg, Zn, constitute attractive key characteristics application. However, challenges remain, including moisture ash content, elevated aluminum levels present processing methods, compositional variability. Improved methods may enhance use, but further needed to address digestibility, optimize processing, assess long-term sustainability. study positions valuable, supplement feed, though comprehensive evaluations are necessary unlock full ensure consistent quality commercial applications.
