Abstract Over the past 36 years much research has been carried out on Bessel beams (BBs) owing to their peculiar properties, viz non-diffraction behavior, self-healing nature, possession of well-defined orbital angular momentum with helical wave-front, and realization smallest central lobe. Here, we provide a detailed review BBs from inception recent developments. We outline fundamental concepts involved in origin BB. The theoretical foundation these was described then experimental through different techniques explored. an elaborate discussion kinds structured modes produced by advantages challenges that come generation applications BB are discussed examples. This provides reference material for readers who wish work non-diffracting promotes application such interdisciplinary areas.

Herein, we report some specific properties and applications of the so-called Arago–Poisson spot in optics. This results from diffraction a plane wave by an occulting disk that leads to small bright its shadow. We discuss such beams. In particular, focus on ultimate size can be reached for these beams, which depends diameter disk, wavelength, distance disk. also highlight self-healing faster-than-light properties. Applications are then proposed. The mainly deal with new traps nanometer sizes dedicated trapping nanoparticles. beams change frequency during propagation their application signal delivery precise determined area.

We show that under the appropriate conditions, Ince–Gaussian modes (IGBs) of stable resonators display a behavior very similar to Mathieu beams (MBs), exhibiting nondiffracting propagation and self-healing properties. high-order IGB propagates in quasi-nondiffractive manner within same conical region as any nondiffractive beam, even when their profiles do not match exactly. Our results indicate new, our knowledge, methods generate MB from spherical provide more efficient ways them Fourier space. These IGBs are an excellent option for applications where quasi-nondiffractive, but exact, is required.
