Latina Mothers' Infant Feeding Experiences During the 2022 Formula Shortage DOI

Background: Mothers report feeling immense pressure to breastfeed their infants, and not doing so can be associated with stigma, shame, judgment. Many Latina mothers struggle meet breastfeeding goals substitute formula earlier than planned. During 2022, an infant recall caused a shortage made acquiring difficult or impossible in many areas of the United States. This study explores mothers' experiences feeding during time shortage. Methods: In-depth interviews ( N = 7) were conducted who formula-fed Interviews analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Mean maternal age was 29.7 years, mean 10.3 months. Three born States, 4 immigrants. Results: Thematic analysis generated 3 themes: (1) Fighting breastfeed; (2) Breastfeeding is only way “good” mother; (3) No on shelves. Participants described determination continue despite challenges before realizing that it limited ability care for children. They discussed emotional toll strategies finding formula. Conclusions: The findings emphasize need additional structural support States prevent future shortages better lactation mental health want breastfeed.
