Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a health issue caused by an enlarged prostate in older men. Its prevalence increases with age, and it results urination-related problems. This works studied the effect of purple corn extract (PCE) on improving BPH symptoms using testosterone propionate (TP)-induced rat model. PCE reduced enlargement weight through inhibition conversion to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) inhibiting 5α-reductase type 2 (Srd5a2) TP-induced rats. In these rats, decreased androgen receptor (AR) expression, AR-mediated signaling, cell proliferation increased apoptotic death. Finally, exhibited anti-inflammatory activity regulation nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) factor erythroid 2-related (Nrf-2) axis. These indicate that Srd5a2 are some beneficial effects improve symptoms.
