Aeromonas salmonicida is the etiological agent of furunculosis, a septicemic disease with high mortality rates affecting salmonids and other teleost species worldwide. Reviewing molecular diagnostic protocols for routine diagnostics, we realized that amplification vapA target gene failed in some cases furunculosis. Therefore, hypothesized emergence new strain may be involved recent outbreaks. In this work, demonstrate locus absent strain, which explains why it lacks major membrane component VapA protein, critical virulence factor. addition, found vapA- differs from its counterparts outer protein lipopolysaccharide profiles, suggesting profound changes at structure level antigenic properties. These features along sequence analysis information allowed us to infer complex genomic rearrangement, probably an indel encompassing entire locus, gave rise phenotype. Although causes pathogen evolution were not fully elucidated, our results strongly suggest responsible raising proportion furunculosis cases, related less virulent low serological response upon vaccination A. antigen formulation currently used Chile.
