Mesoporous silica sieves have been prepared through sol-gel synthesis using diester gemini surfactants as pore templates, aiming to obtain new materials with potential use for water remediation. A series of mesoporous spherical particles submicron size in an alkali-catalyzed reaction, a tetraethyl orthosilicate precursor and bis-quaternary ammonium spacers varied lengths pore-forming agents. The effect the spacer length on particle morphology was studied nitrogen porosimetry, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), ultra-small-angle neutron scattering, scanning, transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). results revealed that all lengths, long-range hexagonal ordering developed materials. were nearly spherical, sizes below 1 micrometer, weak dependence mean could be observed. template removal procedure had strong influence porosity: calcination caused moderate shrinkage pores while retaining structure, whereas treatment acidified ethanol resulted only partial surfactants; however, structure severely destroyed. applicability obtained calcined adsorbents heavy metal ions from example Pb(II). high sorption capacity 110 mg/g batch experiments, at pH 5 4 h contact time.
