Published: Nov. 15, 2023

The urban heat island theory plays a crucial role in the domains of climate and planning. However, conventional Urban Heat Island Functional Zoning (UHIFZ) methods often rely on empirical common sense, neglecting spatial effects that can better explain essence UHIFZ. To address this gap, paper proposes novel method, named Geographically Weighted Kernel K-Means for UHIFZ (GWKKM-UHIFZ). By integrating weights into feature distance metric process, study demonstrates combination machine learning classification algorithms effectively achieve flexible functional zoning provide accurate data support subsequent quantitative analysis. Additionally, evaluation indexes be adjusted according to specific requirements, thereby acquiring valuable thematic information future planning design upgrades.

Urban development inevitably comes with the loss of prime agricultural land, leading to a decline in cropland productivity. The Northeast region is an important grain-producing China, and land great significance ensuring national food security. Here, use cover data MODIS-NPP were used comprehensively understand direct adverse influence urban growth on net primary productivity (NPP) China. results indicated that (1) area increased by total 5230.00 km2 since 2000. phenomenon was particularly notable cities near central transportation trunk line along southern coastal regions. (2) more than half newly added patches originated from cropland. Between 2000 2020, expansion China resulted 0. 85 Tg C NPP. (3) there significant regional variation NPP loss. low altitude slope regions experienced most Meanwhile, large developed caused losses, dispersed had broader impact concentrated expansion. (4) when converting crop yield, it revealed reduction 0.91 million tons grain yield These findings provide valuable insights for protection strategies offering crucial guidance sustainable practices.

Urban green spaces (UGS) are vital for the quality of life in cities. However, managing these metropolitan areas is increasingly challenging. There a critical gap regarding specific challenges and strategies employed by municipalities varying sizes emerging economies. Most existing research focuses on developed countries, leaving void understanding how economies manage UGS under different constraints. This study delves into associated with region São Paulo (MRSP), Brazil, comparing experiences to provide empirical evidence that can inform policy making urban planning practices similar contexts. A structured questionnaire was distributed environmental departments across 39 MRSP. The survey included questions population size, priority given UGS, faced adopted overcome barriers. Chi-square tests were used analyze association between municipality size identified strategies. found larger face significant barriers related high density land use conflicts, which less pronounced smaller municipalities. all Policy makers should focus promoting vertical spaces, expanding greening programs, ensuring equitable resource allocation. Public–private partnerships community involvement processes crucial sustainable management. Integrating policies broader development plans essential creating cohesive environments. Further conduct comparative studies multiple regions countries more comprehensive management globally. integrates insights from ecology, landscape architecture, public policy, emphasizing interdisciplinary approach required effective findings offer practical guidance planners architects design landscapes.

The rapid increase in urban population density driven by development has intensified inequity green space distribution. Identifying the causes of changes equity and developing strategies to improve greening are crucial for optimizing resource allocation alleviating social inequalities. However, long-term spatio-temporal evolution visibility remains underexplored. This study utilized “Time Machine” feature capture street view images from 2014, 2017, 2021, analyzing its across residential communities Wuhan. Deep learning techniques statistical methods, including Gini coefficient location quotient (LQ), were employed assess distribution spatial street-level greenery. results showed that overall Wuhan increased 4.18% between 2014 2021. this improvement did not translate into better equity, as consistently ranged 0.4 0.5. Among seven municipal districts, only Jiang’an District demonstrated relatively equitable 2017 Despite a gradual reduction disparities visibility, mismatch persisted UGS growth distribution, leading uneven patterns equity. explores factors driving inequities proposes enhance greening. Key recommendations include integrating evaluation framework planning guide fair allocation, prioritizing greenery low-income neighborhoods, reducing hardscapes support planting maintenance tall canopy trees. However, the rural areas surrounding large cities typically have a scale and significant differences in development conditions. It necessary formulate policies by category better promote integrated between urban areas, stimulate vitality, create more opportunities for This study constructs an evaluation system under URI, using Xi’an metropolitan area as case study. A clustering algorithm enhanced random forest (RF)–principal component analysis (PCA)–partitioning around medoids (PAM) method applied evaluate comprehensively. Key findings this include following: (i) URI should be decoupled from administrative divisions, considering complex impacts of multi-town functional spillover; (ii) ecological environment, economic development, public service allocation, construction land supply are key factors influencing URI; (iii) overall index presents “high center, low east west” pattern.
