Published: April 17, 2025

While Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers powerful tools for optimizing construction processes, its effective integration hinges on navigating the gap between algorithmic “optimality” and practical “appropriateness”. Focusing China’s industry, a critical context AI deployment, this research explores managerial decision-making processes involved in balancing these two facets. Through qualitative methodology involving 15 expert interviews across diverse organizational types (SOEs, private, consultancy) thematic analysis incorporating constant comparison, study elucidates complex interplay recommendations human judgment. Key findings identify five interconnected themes influencing balance: Decision Balance & Human Adjustment, Data Technology Challenges, Human-AI Collaboration Trust, External Constraints Contextual Factors, Sector-Specific Dynamics. The highlights proactive role of managers as “adaptive integrators” rather than passive users. Extending existing literature, contributes theoretically by challenging simplistic views optimality, refining human-AI interaction concepts, proposing an empirically grounded Adaptive Interaction Framework that explicitly incorporates contextual modulators interpretation. hold significant implications developing more tools, targeted training programs, supportive cultures, nuanced policy guidelines to foster responsible productive analogous operational fields.
