Combining an indicator system developed based on existence–relatedness–growth (ERG) needs and multiple weighting approaches, this paper evaluates the level of high-quality economic development (HQED) in Chinese provinces from perspective human well-being 2007 to 2020. Spatial analysis, Dagum’s Gini coefficient (DGC), spatial econometric modeling were employed investigate spatial–temporal evolutionary characteristics, regional differentiation, driving factors HQED China. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) During period 2007–2019, showed a stable upward trend, gradually produced characteristics “only super power multi-great power” features “point, line plane”, with Beijing as absolute leader, southeastern coastal region advantageous belt, relatively plane central western areas Shaanxi core. (2) degree differentiation provincial narrowed year by year, intra-regional organized follows: eastern > northeastern central; inter-regional was concentrated gaps across other three major regions areas. (3) had significant autocorrelation characteristic, which further revealed Durbin model (SDM) be siphon effect at national levels, i.e., plundering resources opportunities weaker stronger ones. (4) Driving such scale, urbanization level, resource endowment, government size, green technological innovation, industrial structure upgrading, environmental regulations affected four varying degrees. These findings could contribute policymakers’ efforts design targeted policies during transition China’s development.
