Abstract The improper disposal of agricultural food waste (AFW) and its associated plastic packaging significantly exacerbates environmental degradation, including pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, loss valuable resources, while imposing substantial economic burdens. These pressing challenges have spurred advancements in bioplastics as sustainable eco‐friendly alternatives to conventional plastics. Here, the potential AFW, rich biopolymers such starch cellulose, a renewable feedstock is examined for polylactic acid, polybutylene succinate, polyhydroxyalkanoates. It explores characteristics these bioplastics, focusing on production techniques extraction‐based processes, microbial fermentation, fermentation combined with polymerization, synthesis from volatile fatty acids. Additionally, role AFW pretreatment methods, physical, chemical, biological, enzymatic approaches, enhancing conversion efficiency analyzed. it highlighted that recent bioplastic improved efficiency, biodegradability, scalability, offering viable substitute traditional findings demonstrate valorizing not only addresses but also promotes sustainability circular economy principles, paving way greener industries reduced ecological impact.

Simultaneous nitrification and autotrophic denitrification (SNAD) has received attention as an efficient biological nitrogen removal alternative. However, SNAD using elemental sulfur (S0) scarcely been studied. Thus, the main objective of this research was to study behavior a simultaneous nitrification–autotrophic operation in sequential batch reactor (SNAD-SBR) at lab scale S0 electron donor, including its kinetics. Two-scale reactors were operated scales cycles for 155 days with increasing loading rate (NLR: 0.0296 0.0511 kg N-NH4+/m3/d) 31 °C. As result, donor performed successfully, efficiency 98.63% 44.9%, limiting phase. The kinetic model adjusted ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) Monod-type (µmax = 0.791 d−1), while, nitrite-oxidizing (NOB), Haldane-type employed 0.822 d−1). For denitrifying microorganisms, by half order (k1/2v 0.2054 mg1/2/L1/2/h). we concluded that could be feasible similar other processes.

Chile has numerous areas that lack sewage collection, including in the capital city. Sanitation these cases is managed through individual solutions like septic tanks or small wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) use biological treatment, usually activated sludge with extended aeration. In general, design of systems adheres to quality standards mandated by regulations for discharge, infiltration, irrigation. this scenario, traditional methods increasing dissolved oxygen (DO) hydraulic retention time (HRT) were unable effectively reduce excessive nutrients. Therefore, literature related nutrient excess and denitrification consulted reviewed compile different suitable presented issue. Potential modeled verified using free simulation software WRc STOAT. The accurately predicted unsatisfactory results current setup provided parameters proposed modifications. Experience, precise user definition, influential characteristics, modeling are essential WWTPs.
