China’s agricultural sector is transitioning from extensive management to intensive management, and land transfer brings about changes in use methods, which may encourage the enter a sustainable development track, but this mechanism has not been effectively proven. Using SBM-GML index construct green total factor productivity measure level of each province (or autonomous region or municipality directly under central government) provincial panel data 2010 2022, we applied interactive fixed-effects model empirically test impact on development, with focus analyzing heterogeneity related mechanisms impact. The results indicate that (1) significantly promotes conclusion still held true after robustness tests such as controlling for regional omitted variables, replacing dependent changing sample size, IV estimation, GMM estimation. (2) testing found mainly by increasing desirable output, no significant effect reducing non-point source pollution. At same time, improves output through allocation effects rather than scale operation effects, thereby promoting development. (3) analysis higher quantile is, weaker role indicating greater areas poor foundations, foundations are more likely obtain space transfer. different methods objects was heterogeneous. Introduction Agriculture faces significant challenges in ensuring global food security while minimizing resource costs and environmental impacts. The development of digital infrastructure offers transformative potential for agricultural systems aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This study examines role enhancing grain production capacity China, a key player system. Methods We analyzed data from 277 prefecture-level cities China 2011 to 2021. A double machine learning model was employed empirically assess impact on capacity, allowing robust insights into causal relationships. Results reveal that significantly enhances production. Mechanism analysis results indicate construction drives technological advancements farmland scale, contributing increased capacity. Heterogeneity show is major grain-producing regions central-eastern regions, its effects are relatively limited production-consumption balanced main consumption western regions. Discussion underscore importance strengthening rural areas improve Tailored policy implications suggested enhance sustainable contribute security, particularly varying dynamics.
