How to promote the household energy transition (HET) has become an important response extreme climate change. Our paper examines whether a low-carbon city pilot (LCCP) can HET. We empirically use Staggered Difference-in-Differences (DID) model explore its mechanisms. The results indicate that LCCP substantially primary driving mechanism underlying this is enhanced governmental emphasis on carbon emission reduction and elevated public environmental awareness. However, increased local expenditure conservation protection does not serve as effective mechanism. heterogeneity analysis reveals most pronounced impact HET among high-income groups, whereas effect low-income groups relatively minor. Furthermore, significantly promotes in eastern region urban areas, while central tends inhibit it, western rural areas show no significant effect. further Municipalities Strong-Capital Provinces, where centralized governance strong political incentives enhance policy implementation. In contrast, shows limited or even negative effects Non-Municipal Provinces Non-Strong-Capital Provinces. provide valuable insights for governments bolster implementation achieve neutrality at earlier stage.
