Urban–rural fragmentation represents a significant challenge encountered by nations globally, particularly in both developing and developed contexts, during the modernisation process. This study examines effects of rural land system reform on facilitating integrated development between urban areas. The analysis impact 2010 liberalisation transfer policy employs dual machine learning model, utilising provincial-level data from China spanning 2005 to 2022, address limitations traditional causal inference models while ensuring estimation accuracy. findings indicate that significantly enhances urban–rural development, demographic, economic, ecological dimensions. mechanisms encompass facilitation extensive agricultural service operations, new business entities, migration labour, enhancement capital. Furthermore, notable disparities exist reforms across various regions, concerning integration levels. exhibit marginally diminishing trend. influence varies with economic levels, demonstrating nonlinear relationship, most pronounced observed regions moderate development. Additionally, differ based geographic location. policies central region exhibiting effect, followed north-eastern region, western eastern which shows least effect. provides reference for advancing marketisation factors, improving efficiency resource allocation, regionally multiple layers system.

The Chinese government is vigorously implementing the rural revitalization strategy and accelerating process of new-type urbanization. rapid development digital economy has emerged as a new driving force for This study aims to explore how impacts China’s urbanization from direct, heterogeneous, indirect perspectives. Using provincial-level panel data in China 2014 2022, mixed-methods approach employed empirical research. CRITIC Entropy TOPSIS are used assess comprehensive level temporal characteristics Moreover, global-local auto-correlation analysis carried out depict spatial distribution two variables. Rural Revitalization (RR) is a key national strategy in China aimed at sustainable rural development and has gained significant attention. Given the unique characteristics of different villages, understanding differentiated paths to achieve RR essential. This study introduces new "5I Framework" (INDUS-INHAB-INDOC-INFRA-INCOM) assess RR's overall status (ODS) paths. Then, using western as case, this employs entropy weight, technique for order preference by similarity an ideal solution (TOPSIS), fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), hierarchical clustering categorize into "4L Category" (Lots-Learning-Labor-Living). Context-specific recommendations are provided each category. "5I" "4L" derived from their initial letters easier recall global dissemination. Our findings reveal ODS's temporal fluctuations between Acceptable Good Grades (0.3 0.6), with Chongqing's villages showing downward trend (from 0.439 0.407); also spatial differences ODS, northern generally score higher due distinct characteristics. Seven identified, highlighting varying dimensions essential success: INFRA crucial across all high ODS paths, while INHAB INDOC not always central. Besides, these grouped four clusters via clustering, indicating that can be achieved integrating "lots" aspects, enhancing "learning" cultural among residents, requiring villagers' "labor" support agriculture, or improving "living" environment. The clustered categories enhance applicability our proposed countermeasures similar contexts. facilitates theoretical evaluation RR, underpinned promotes effective implementation practices—both representing innovations study.
