Science journalists, traditionally, play a key role in delivering science information to wider audience. However, changes the media ecosystem and science-media relationship are posing challenges reliable news production. Additionally, recent developments such as ChatGPT Artificial Intelligence (AI) more generally, may have further consequences for work of (science) journalists. Through mixed-methodology, quality reporting was studied within context AI. A content analysis output about AI (news articles published time frame 1 September 2022–28 February 2023) explored adherence indicators, while interviews shed light on journalism practices regarding with Perspectives from understudied areas four European countries (Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Spain) were included compared. The findings show that received continuous attention countries. Furthermore, despite different landscapes, adhered same criteria applying rigour, including sources information, accessibility, relevance. Thematic interview revealed impact profession is still its infancy. Expected benefits related helping repetitive tasks (e.g. translations), positively influencing journalistic principles engagement, impact, concerns showed fear lower integrity transparency information. More interviewees expressed state journalism, lack funding reporting. Journalists who employed staff well those worked freelancers put efforts ensuring output, example, via editorial oversight, discussions, or memberships associations. Further research into recommended.
