Analysing China's cropland changes highlights the intertwined dynamics of urbanization, industrialization, and ecological policies, offering insights into efficiency advancing agricultural modernization. This study analysed county-level area landscape fragmentation from 1990 to 2021 using land use data. The results revealed an uneven distribution in China, which was mainly concentrated regions such as Northeast North China Plain, Sichuan Basin, Middle-Lower Yangtze Plains, with most occurring north Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River boundary. In past three decades, has decreased by 8.68 million ha. Approximately 72.14% counties experienced a decline, 24 provinces reported net loss. Notably, there large-scale type replacement primarily manifested spatial displacement forest, grassland, impervious surfaces. As result, reduction accounted for only 22.24% total decrease. From 2021, 52.04% exhibited no significant (TA) or patch density (PD), maintaining stable landscape. A 20.70% had TA reductions without PD changes, Huang-Huai-Hai Plain. Counties but declines represented 11.72%, distributed transitional zones second third steps terrain, Loess Plateau, Yunnan-Guizhou some areas Southeast Hills. increases 7.79%, found border between Henan Anhui, well Jiangsu. Thus, whether loss over 30 years led increased shown clear heterogeneity. provides scientific support guiding utilization enhance sustainability resilience China.
