Varroatosis, caused by the Varroa destructor mite, is currently most dangerous parasitic disease threatening survival of honey bees worldwide. Its adverse effect on welfare and health requires regular use specific acaricides. This condition has led to a growing development resistance phenomena towards frequently used drugs. In addition, another important aspect that should not be understated, toxicity persistence chemicals in environment. Therefore, identification viable environmentally friendly alternatives urgently needed. this scenario, essential oils are promising candidates. The aim study was assess contact toxicity, fumigation efficacy repellent Origanum heracleoticum L. oil (EO) against V. mite. tests, each experimental replicate consisted 15 adult female mites divided as follows: 5 treated with EO diluted HPLC grade acetone, acetone alone (as negative control) Amitraz positive control). tested at concentrations 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1 2 mg/mL. For replicate, mortality manually assessed after one hour. evaluated through prolonged exposure different time intervals. After exposure, constituting an were transferred Petri dish containing bee larva 48 h. action investigated implementing directional choice test mandatory route. During repellency tests behavior mite (90 min its introduction route) influenced EO. showed best mg/mL concentrations, neutralizing (dead + inactivated) 90.9% 80% mites, respectively. mean rate maximum min) 60% 84% 24 h, Overall, these results demonstrate significant O. destructor, suggesting possible alternative control varroatosis farms order improve Apis mellifera and, consequently, hive productions.

Varroatosis is an important parasitic disease of Apis mellifera caused by the mite Varroa destructor (V. destructor). The parasite able to transmit numerous pathogens honeybees which can lead colony collapse. In recent years, effectiveness authorized drug products has decreased due increasing resistance phenomena. Therefore, search for alternatives commercially available drugs mandatory. this context, essential oils (EOs) prove be a promising choice studied their known acaricide properties. research work, activity EO vapours isolated from epigeal part (whole plant) fennel (Foeniculum vulgare sbps. piperitum) and its three fractions (leaves, achenes flowers) against V. was evaluated. fumigation using two methods. first involved prolonged exposure mites oil vapour variable times. After exposure, five in each replicate were placed Petri dish with larva. Mortality, chronic toxicity phenomena, assessed after 48 h. second method aimed translate results obtained vitro test into semi-field experiment. two-level cages set up. lower compartment cage, material releasing placed; upper compartment, Varroa-infested set. showed that increase mortality directly proportional time concentration. whole plant returned 68% at highest concentration (2 mg/mL) (48 h control), while leaves, flowers 64%, 52% 56% mortality, respectively. experiment, up 20 times higher than one used study required achieve similar drop >50%. show tests should only preliminary screening activity. followed tests, are identify threshold bees effective dose field studies.
