Reproductive cycle of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) from the Moroccan western Mediterranean Sea: histology, gonadal index and size at first sexual maturity

The Moroccan Mediterranean coasts are an important habitat for ecologically and commercially valuable species such as the common sea urchin, which is part of Echinoidea class. A study reproductive cycle Paracentrotus lividus was carried out on coast Tangier, located in southwestern Strait Gibraltar western Sea, from January 2021 to February 2022. total 840 samples showed that 54.8% were between 50 60 mm, sex ratio oscillated around 1:1 most months. Moreover, histological analysis has shown annual with a single spawning season March July, including six phases. In general, both sexes have synchronous gamete synthesis release. However, there no significant variation distribution gametogenic stages females males (ANOVA, P > 0.05). Furthermore, gonadal index (GI) recorded its maximum value April (5.4± 1.43) lowest October (0.4±0.58). while correlation test indicated relationship temperature, chlorophyll reproduction P. lividus. Finally, L50 method size at first sexual maturity 34.32 mm 34.94 females. findings this research could be helpful decision-makers order develop suitable strategy allowing protection management species.
